We are in the process of migrating the urug.org web site. Jamis Buck has been maintaining the site since its inception. Recently he asked if there was someone more local, that would be willing to take over maintaining the site. Chris Cameron of Soniplex is donating hosting space. Coby Randquist is heading up maintaining the site and mailing list, Jarod Reid and Pat Eyler have also volunteered to help with the content and maintenance. We hope to keep the site accruate, timely, and useful for the ruby community here in Utah, and look forward to suggestions from the various groups.

Once we have a plan for migrating the mailing list we will let everyone know.

17 August 2006

At the next utahvalley.rb meeting on August 22nd, Pat Eyler will be giving his upcoming RubyConf*MI presentation on Ruby libraries for developers.

After a period of inactivity on behalf of slc.rb a flurry of discussions on the urug mailing list has gotten slc.rb back on track. Our next meeting will be held on September 7th at Nuemont University.

The format for this meeting has not yet been determined, but will likely be a round table format, and we will use it to determine how we would like the slc.rb meetings to take shape in the future.

The RSVP application will be off line for a little bit so for now we will be utilizing the Mailing List to keep a tally of anticipated attendants.

Rod Schmidt will be talking about RubyCocoa, a Ruby to Objective-C bridge that allows one to develop native Mac OS X applications using Ruby and the Cocoa frameworks. Rod’s presentation is an update to the presentation he gave at the 2003 O’Reilly Mac Developers Conference. It covers how to use the Cocoa frameworks with RubyCocoa and takes you through creating a small demo application.

Rod Schmidt has a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah and has been a professional developer in the Salt Lake area for over 15 years. In the past he has developed in C/C++ on the Windows platform and in Java on the J2EE platform. Rod has been developing desktop applications using the Cocoa application framework for the Mac OS X platform for the past 3 years. Rod has always been interested in different languages and also dabbled in Lisp and Smalltalk. Rod discovered Ruby in 2000 and has been following it every since. He runs the one man software company infiniteNIL, with a client that develops a leading Mac OS X desktop application. infiniteNIL also sells PhoneWord and is working on a new product called PackRat that will soon be available in early release.

Please RSVP before January 25 2006 at 5:00pm.

Daniel Jimmie, Account Executive of Robert Half International will spend some time at the beginning of the meeting introducing himself and his company.

Following Daniel’s introduction, things will be pretty informal, so if you’d like to get together in groups and talk, or write code, or whatnot, feel free to do so.

The BudgetWise team may (time permitting) spend some of this time reworking the transaction edit UI.

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP before November 16 2005 at 5:00pm.

We have a new meeting place, too--Neumont University is now hosting our meetings, thanks to the footwork of William Voll. We will be meeting at 7pm in room #300 of Neumont University. NU is west off of the 106th south exit in Sandy. (See this page for directions.)

The meeting scheduled for today didn't take place, I'm afraid. I've been working overtime to get Backpack ready for launch. We'll meet next month, May 25th, though, and make up for lost time.

16 Apr 2005

A new RSVP mechanism is now in place. If you intend on attending the next meeting (on the 27th), please go RSVP for it, by submitting your email address. (Your email will only be used to ensure the uniqueness of each RSVP--it will never be given out!)

The first meeting of the URUG will be held on April 27th at 7pm. The venue and content remain to be determined. Future meetings will be held on the 4th Wednesday of every month.

5 Apr 2005

We've got the domain registered, and the website up. There is also a mailing list (here--feel free to join!) where further discussions about the organization of the URUG will occur.

No RSS feeds or anything yet--it's all being done by hand. Eventually we'll move to a more automated system, but there are more pressing issues to resolve first.
